Worst First Date Mistakes: Can You Avoid Them?

If you are on the singles scene and you plan to look for love on a few dates, you need to learn a thing or two about the worst first date mistakes out there and how to avoid them. This is especially true if you’ve been out of the singles life for some time now and are just jumping back into dating. You might be a bit out of practice but this doesn’t have to reflect poorly on the date.

Let’s face it, there are just some things that people do on dates that drive us nuts. First dates are first impressions and if you screw up then, there’s a good chance there won’t be any dates after that.

So here are some first date mistakes you need to avoid:

Flashing your Cash

Maybe you’re loaded; maybe you’re not. But flashing your cash around sends the wrong impression on the first date. If she’s a girl who doesn’t like that sort of thing, you’re going to turn her off. If she’s a gold-digger, then you’re going to attract her to you just for the cash.

Discussing Sex

Talking about sex on the first date is asking for trouble. In the end, you’ll both probably be very uncomfortable. It may also give her the wrong impression of you. She might start to believe you’re the type guy to pressure a girl to get what you want.

Pretending to Be Someone You’re Not

You’re dating this girl in hopes of starting a new, lasting relationship but if you pretend to be someone you’re not, it won’t end well. She will either be disappointed because she thought you would be different or she may fall for you and as soon as you stop pretending, the relationship will fall apart. To have a lasting relationship, you have to be honest from the beginning.

Discussing Politics

Discussing politics on the first date is a bad idea. Suppose you completely disagree on the subject. Is that really the first impression you want to make? It would be better to play it safe and not talk about such a controversial topic when you’re trying to make a good impression. Later on if you begin a relationship and realize that you disagree about certain political subjects, it won’t matter so much.

Change Plans

Once you have made plans for the date don’t change them. Nobody likes surprises on the first date. Going out to dinner in a nice restaurant is a good plan for a first date. Changing these plans will make her uncomfortable and asking her to skip the restaurant and go straight to your place for dinner, might end the date before it even gets started.

Making Full Contact

On the first date, you don’t want to try to hold her hand, hug her tightly or kiss her on the lips. This date is for getting to know each other a little better so you can decide if you want to go out again. If you attempt to make full contact, you may scare her away. A kiss on the cheek at the end of the night or touching the lower part of her back when entering a restaurant is acceptable.

Talking about Your Former Relationship

Never talk about your former relationship. This is a real turn-off. The girl you’re dating now does not want to hear about your last love or why you are no longer together. Her main concern is what’s going on now. There will be plenty of time to discuss your past if you discover you want to continue seeing each other.

Don’t Talk about Other Dates

First of all, you are not going to impress her by talking about how many dates you have or have not had. She does not want to hear about your worst date ever, best date ever or funniest date. All she cares about is this date, here and now. If constantly talk about other dates, at best she will be very bored. At worse, she may begin to think that you are just playing games and completely lose interest.

Complaining about Singles on Other Dating Sites

You met on one singles site, but you may be a member of several. Do you tell her or him that your profile is live on other dating sites? What about telling in detail, what you liked and did not about other singles you met through your present online service? Don’t be foolish. Honesty is a good thing, but you should not go out of your way to appear overly active on several dating sites for singles all at once. It makes you seem desperate, or even obsessed. You should strive to show that you are balanced in your pursuits, and reasonably happy with your life as it is now, other than being single, and that you do not over-invest your time surfing online dating sites to the detriment of other activities.

Avoid these worst first date mistakes and you just might be on the road to a new, happy relationship.
